The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl Announces Inaugural Albertsons Tackle Hunger Project

The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, in conjunction with Feeding Children Everywhere, Albertsons and The Idaho Foodbank, will work together to create more than 61,000 meals for Idaho’s local communities

BOISE, Idaho – The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl (FIPB)will work with Feeding Children Everywhere (FCE) to produce packaged meals that will be distributed throughout Idaho’s local communities.  Sponsored by Albertsons, the inaugural event “AlbertsonsTackle Hunger Project” is expected to produce more than 40,000 meals and will be distributed through The Idaho Foodbank to local communities. The production of the meals will help ensure that working families, children and seniors receive nourishing food and a balanced meal during this holiday season.

“Albertsons’ involvement with the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl continues to grow, and we are excited to participate as the marque sponsor of this innovative event,” said Gineal Davidson, vice president of  merchandising and marketing at Albertsons Companies Intermountain Division. “This year’s event is aligned to Albertsons’ mission of improving the health and well-being of our local community and connecting people through common action for an important cause.”

The Albertsons Tackle Hunger Project builds upon the bowl’s tradition of giving back through charitable food donations. Similar to the past several years, the bowl will be supplementing the meals with donated potatoes and beef from several stalwart Idaho companies, including J.R. Simplot Company, Idaho Grower Shippers Association, and theAgri Beef Co.  Donations from these organizations will result in thousands of pounds of potatoes and beef that is expected to produce an additional 21,000 meals that will have a positive impact this holiday season.

Hosted at Bishop Kelly High School on Monday, Dec. 17, the meals will be assembled by the two opposing teams competing in the 2018 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.  The first of many community-oriented events during bowl week, the Albertsons Tackle Hunger project will rely on the brawn of the two teams, staff and university personnel, as well as community volunteers to assemble the meals in a 90-minute flurry of activity.  Albertsons is expecting that as the music blares, hairnets are applied and meals are packaged, that the assembly line will result in a competitive and productive event that results in the teams working side-by-side to make a real impact to stop hunger.

“Feeding Children Everywhere is changing the way that we address hunger here in the states and across the globe,” said David Green, CEO of FCE.  “We are excited to partner with the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl to create a fun and meaningful event.  The meals produced will add to the more than 110,000,000 meals that have been created and distributed since we started in 2010.  I want to thank Albertsons for sponsoring this event and look forward to seeing how many meals can be produced by this year’s bowl participants.”

“This year’s event is especially timely, as The Idaho Foodbank works to deliver 2.7 million meals in the last two months of the year to thousands of Idahoans who struggle to put food on the table,” said Karen Vauk, President and CEO of The Idaho Foodbank. “This collaboration is an excellent example of like-missioned organizations partnering to exponentially increase the impact to the food insecure that we serve every day.”

The addition of 61,000 meals supports The Idaho Foodbank’s vision of a hunger-free Idaho and as it serves approximately 179,000 Idahoans who face food insecurity during the holiday season and throughout the year.

“It is important to the Bowl committee to expand on its charitable donation efforts every year. With the support of Albertsons, we are able to make this year’s event a reality and provide a substantial amount of meals and nutrients that we hope will feed more than 61,000 people locally and across the state,” said Kevin McDonald, executive director of the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.  “Boise’s business community is unique in its support of local charities, and I would like to recognize each of the key sponsors, especially Albertsons, in allowing the bowl to better the community that we live in.”

The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl will host Western Michigan from the Mid-American Conference and BYU on Friday, Dec. 21, at 2 p.m. MT, at Albertsons Stadium in Boise, Idaho.  Tickets for the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl are on sale to the general public through famousidahopotatobowl.com or the Albertsons Stadium ticket office. Reservations for premium ticket packages are currently available, which include prime ticket locations, hospitality benefits in tent village and corporate exposure. BYU, Western Michigan to Meet in Famous Idaho Potato Bowl

BOISE, Idaho – The 22nd Famous Idaho Potato Bowl will feature BYU and Western Michigan, after each team officially accepted invitations Sunday. The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl will be played Friday, Dec. 21 at Albertsons Stadium on the campus of Boise State University. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. MST, and will air on ESPN.

BYU (6-6) is making its first appearance in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. Western Michigan (7-5) is making its second trip to the game. The Broncos competed in the 2014 edition against Air Force.

This will be the sixth all-time meeting between BYU and Western Michigan. The previous five matchups all came between 1962 and 1970, with the Cougars winning three times.

“We’re excited to host BYU for the first time and welcome back a Western Michigan program that was a great participant a few years ago,” said Famous Idaho Potato Bowl Executive Director Kevin McDonald. “This is a fantastic matchup for our community with two teams they will really be able to get behind, along with two young quarterbacks and two up-and-coming coaches.”

BYU

The Cougars won two games in November against fellow FBS independent programs UMass and New Mexico State to secure a 6-6 record and solidify their 36th bowl appearance. BYU is back in the postseason after a one-year hiatus in 2017 snapped a streak of 12 consecutive bowl berths.

Defense and special teams have been BYU’s calling card all season. The Cougars rank 18th in the country, allowing 325 yards per game to their opponents. Their kickoff coverage and punt coverage both rank in the top 16 for average yards allowed per return. The opportunistic defense is led by a standout at each level. Defensive end Corbin Kaufusi has 8.5 sacks, linebacker Sione Takitaki leads the team with 99 tackles and safety Dayan Ghanwoloku has pounced on four fumble recoveries.

Freshman quarterback Zach Wilson started the last six games of the regular season, taking over for Tanner Mangum midway through the season. The two quarterbacks have combined to throw 14 touchdowns, spread across 10 different receivers.

Western Michigan

The Broncos used a late touchdown to beat Northern Illinois in their regular-season finale, snapping a three-game skid and cementing their bowl eligibility with a 7-5 record. This is Western Michigan’s ninth bowl appearance and first since playing in the Cotton Bowl following the 2016 season.

Seven Broncos were named All-Mid-American Conference, led by first-team selections in running back LeVante Bellamy and right guard Luke Juriga. Their rushing attack also includes Jamauri Bogan’s conference-leading 15 touchdowns – eighth-most nationally. The strong ground game has helped Western Michigan control time of possession all season, averaging 33:27 per game to lead the MAC and rank ninth in the country.

Western Michigan can also credit special teams play for its success. The Broncos rank second in the country in punt returns, averaging 21.44 yards per attempt and are one of 19 FBS teams with multiple punt return touchdowns.

The Broncos are making their second appearance in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. They suffered a 38-24 loss to Air Force in 2014, their first of three consecutive bowl appearances under former head coach P.J. Fleck. This is Western Michigan’s first bowl berth under second-year head coach Tim Lester.

2018 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl

May 1, 2018 / For Immediate Release

2018 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl Set for December 21

BOISE, Idaho – The 22nd edition of the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl will kick off Friday, Dec. 21 at 2 p.m. MST/4 p.m. EST. The game will be held at Boise State University’s Albertsons Stadium and televised on ESPN.

The nation’s northern-most bowl game traditionally features a Mountain West (MW) vs. Mid-American Conference (MAC) matchup. This will mark the MW’s sixth straight appearance in the bowl’s history, while the MAC will look to secure a spot for the ninth time in 10 years.

The 22nd annual game has become synonymous with the start of winter break festivities, holding the same Friday slot as last season. Last year Wyoming cruised to a 37-14 victory over Central Michigan, led by a swarming defense, and Potato Bowl MVP and recently drafted to the Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen. The Cowboys got off to a fast start and never looked back, scoring a bowl record 21 points in the first quarter. Wyoming’s relentless pursuit on defense forced eight turnovers, also a bowl record, resulting in 23 points. Allen threw for three touchdowns on the day, totaling 154 yards.

“The matchups between Mountain West and MAC opponents are always a thrilling experience and last year was no exception,” said Kevin McDonald, Famous Idaho Potato Bowl Executive Director. We look forward to another exciting game being played prior to the holidays. It gives the bowl a great opportunity to create an outstanding game-day experience for our local and traveling fans.”

Friday’s game will be one of two matchups that afternoon, teaming up with the Bahamas Bowl which kicks off earlier in the day at 12:30 p.m. EST.

Famous Idaho Potato Bowl tickets will go on sale to the general public in September through famousidahopotatobowl.com or the Albertsons Stadium ticket office. Reservations for premium ticket packages are currently available, which include prime ticket locations, hospitality benefits in tent village and corporate exposure. For more package information contact the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl office at (208) 424-1011.

2017 Bowl Recap

Wyoming Starts Fast, Finishes Strong in 34-17 Win

BOISE, Idaho – Wyoming’s defense and quarterback Josh Allen carried plenty of hype throughout the 2017 season. Both put on a show in the 2017 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, as the Cowboys (8-5, 5-3 MW) defeated Central Michigan (8-5, 6-2 MAC), 37-14, Friday at Albertsons Stadium.

Allen finished the game 11-of-19 passing, with 154 yards and three touchdowns, while the Cowboy (8-5, 5-3 MW) defense forced eight turnovers and held the Chippewas to 18 yards rushing.

The eight turnovers forced by the Wyoming defense sets a Famous Idaho Potato Bowl record for most turnovers, besting the previous record of six by Georgia Tech in 2003.

Allen was named the game’s MVP, and declared for the 2018 NFL Draft following the game.

Wyoming overcame a three-and-out on their opening drive to force a fumble on the next Chippewa possession and score on their next four drives to go up 24-7.

Allen hit scoring strikes to Jared Scott for 23 yards, Austin Conway from 11 yards out and C.J. Johnson for 45 yards to put the Cowboys up 21-7 – breaking the Potato Bowl record for most points in the first quarter in the process.

A pair of field goals from Cooper Rothe in the second quarter gave Wyoming the 27-7 lead to head into the lockeroom at halftime.

Tyler Hall intercepted Chippewa quarterback Shane Morris’ pass at their own 37-yard line to open the second half, paving the way for Rothe to chip in a 20-yard field goal to put the Cowboys up 30-7.

On the ensuing drive, Morris hit wide receiver Corey Willis for 30 yards to the Wyoming three-yard line. Two plays later, Jonathan Ward pushed the ball across the plane for Central Michigan’s second touchdown of the game. Michael Armstrong made the point after to make it a 30-14 game.

Morris finished the game with 329 yards passing, seventh-most in Potato Bowl history. Ward and tight end Tyler Conklin led Central Michigan with 109 and 98 yards receiving, respectively.

Central Michigan was knocking at the door of the red zone with 11:23 remaining in the game, but Morris was hit on the run by Youhanna Ghaifan and fumbled. The Cowboy’s Carl Granderson scooped the fumble and took it 58 yards for the score to go up 37-14.

Wyoming scored 23 points off of turnovers.

The win gives Wyoming consecutive eight-win season for the first time since the 1987-88 seasons.

Five Year Title Sponsor Extension

Dec. 13, 2017 / For Immediate Release

Famous Idaho Potato Bowl and Idaho Potato Commission agree on a new Title Sponsor Extension

BOISE, Idaho – The Idaho Potato Commission (IPC) agreed to a five-year extension for the naming rights to the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, through 2021. The IPC has been the title sponsor of the nation’s northernmost Bowl since 2011.

The game, played annually since 1997, takes place at Albertsons Stadium on the campus of Boise State University. The 2017 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, featuring Central Michigan and Wyoming, is set for Dec. 22, at 2 p.m. MST, and will be televised on ESPN.

“Idaho produces the best potatoes in the world and makes the Idaho Potato Commission a perfect title sponsor for our Bowl,” said Kevin McDonald, Executive Director of the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. “We have enjoyed a strong partnership the past six games and look forward to many more.”

“The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl has proven to be an extremely effective sponsorship allowing the entire Idaho potato industry to get involved and support Idaho’s most important agricultural crop, which generates more than $4.5 billion in annual revenue and employs more than 30,000 people,” commented Frank Muir, President & CEO, IPC. “We are looking forward to being a part of the country’s premier cold weather college bowl game for another five years.”

The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl ranks alongside some of the most recognizable bowls in the country as a game that pays tribute to its state’s top agricultural export. The Orange Bowl, Sugar Bowl and Cotton Bowl all took their namesakes from products critical to their respective state’s economic health. Idaho has been the nation’s largest producer of potatoes every year since 1957. The “Famous Potato” slogan was initiated by the IPC and added to the state’s license plates in 1948.

Through the extended partnership, the Bowl will be featured prominently in national and regional marketing campaigns conducted by the IPC. The popular Big Idaho Potato Truck will once again be front and center at this year’s game. Through its charitable program, “A Big Helping,” the Truck will be making a donation to RODS, a non-profit that finds home in the U.S. for children in other countries who have Down syndrome. The Truck has served as the main attraction at several high-profile events in 2017, including the Pro Football Hall of Fame Parade and the NASCAR race at Pocono Raceway.

About the Idaho Potato Commission

Established in 1937, the IPC is a state agency responsible for promoting and protecting the famous “Grown in Idaho®” seal, a federally registered certification mark that assures consumers are purchasing genuine, top-quality Idaho® potatoes. Idaho’s growing season of warm days and cool nights, ample mountain-fed irrigation and rich volcanic soil gives Idaho® potatoes their unique texture, taste and dependable performance, which differentiates them from potatoes grown in other states.

Tickets

Tickets for the 2017 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl are available for purchase at FamousIdahoPotatoBowl.com. Prices start at $20 for reserved seating in the South End Zone. Tickets for reserved seating in the upper curves are on sale for $30, while main stadium seating is priced at $50 and Stadium Club seats are priced at $75. A limited number of suites, club seats and loge boxes are available by contacting the Boise State Athletic Ticket Office at (208) 426-4737. Tickets for those areas start at $100.

The 21st annual game is becoming synonymous with the holiday season, being played on Dec. 22 for the third consecutive year. Last year Idaho held off a tenacious Colorado State team, 61-50, in a record-setting affair. For just the third time in college football bowl history, both teams eclipsed the 600-yard mark, combining for 1,206 yards of high-flying offense — and that was after a scoreless first quarter.

The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl proceeds provide tickets and/or contributions to Idaho Charities that include the United Way, Optimist Youth Football, Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Boise School District, Treasure Valley YMCA, Boys and Girls Clubs, Girls Scouts and Armed Forces personnel.

2017 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl – Dec 22

Dec. 3, 2017 / For Immediate Release

Central Michigan, Wyoming Accept Invites to Play in Famous Idaho Potato Bowl

Matchup slated for Friday, Dec. 22 at 2 p.m. MST

BOISE, Idaho – Central Michigan University (8-4) of the Mid-American Conference and the University of Wyoming (7-5) of the Mountain West Conference have accepted invitations to play in the 21st Famous Idaho Potato Bowl on Friday, Dec. 22, at 2 p.m. MST. The game will take place at Albertsons Stadium on the campus of Boise State University and will air on ESPN. This is the two schools’ third meeting and first bowl matchup. The teams are looking to break a 1-1 tie in the series, each boasting a win on their home turf. The last tilt went to CMU, 32-20, back in 2002.

Central Michigan

The Chippewas rattled off five consecutive wins to end the regular season at 8-4, including a 6-2 conference mark to finish second in the MAC West Division. Head coach John Bonamego is in his third season at the helm, leading CMU to a bowl game each year. The Chippewas are headed to a bowl game for the 11th time in program history and ninth time in the last 12 years.

Central Michigan boasts one of the top pass defenses in the country, including the top turnover-producing unit in the FBS and the nation’s leading sack artist. First-team All-MAC defensive end Joe Ostman has 12 sacks in 10 games. Ostman’s 1.2 sacks per game is the highest average in the country. Defensive backs Josh Cox (six) and Sean Bunting (five) have combined for 11 of CMU’s 19 interceptions. Cox and Bunting both rank in the top 10 nationally in interceptions. The Chippewas have also recovered 12 fumbles to total 31 takeaways, the top mark in the country.

Quarterback Shane Morris ranks second in the MAC with 26 touchdown passes, 14 going to all-league wide receivers Corey Willis and Mark Chapman. Willis leads the way with nine scores. Running back Jonathan Ward enters the postseason 12 yards shy of 1,000 for the season.

This is CMU’s first appearance in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. The Chippewas have a 3-7 all-time record in bowl games, last picking up a win in the 2012 Little Caesar’s Pizza Bowl.

Wyoming

The Cowboys finished the regular season 7-5, earning their second consecutive bowl bid under fourth-year head coach Craig Bohl. Their 5-3 record in the Mountain West was good for second place in the Mountain Division.

Five Cowboys were named All-Mountain West on the defensive side of the ball. Defensive back Andrew Wingard earned first-team honors for the second time and was joined by linemen Youhanna Ghaifan and Carl Granderson. Linebacker Logan Wilson and defensive back Rico Gafford each picked up second-team recognition.

The all-conference quintet leads an opportunistic defense which ranks 13th nationally in points allowed (17.8 per game), thanks in large part to 16 interceptions and 14 fumble recoveries. The 30 takeaways rank second in the country, behind only Famous Idaho Potato Bowl counterpart Central Michigan.

Wyoming’s offense is guided by highly-touted NFL prospect Josh Allen at quarterback. Allen has accounted for nearly 2,000 yards of total offense and 18 touchdowns. Big-play receiver C.J. Johnson has caught six touchdowns and averages 17.3 yards per reception.

Wyoming is making its first appearance in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. It will be the 15th bowl appearance in program history. The Cowboys are 6-8 in their previous 14 bowl games.

“We are very excited to welcome Central Michigan and Wyoming to the 2017 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl,” said Executive Director Kevin McDonald. “There is always extra enthusiasm around the bowl when we have two first-time participants and this year will be no different.”

“We have a great lineup of bowl-week events for the teams, their fans and the local community,” said McDonald. “Now we have two exciting teams with big-play capabilities who will put an exclamation mark on the festivities with a really competitive game.”
