The game will be a rematch of the 2010 version when NIU defeated Fresno State 40-17. The win marks the Huskies’ only and the Bulldogs’ last appearance in the event. Fresno State defeated Virginia 37-34 in a 2004 overtime thriller and downed Georgia Tech 40-28 in 2007.

“We are thrilled to have a rematch of our game in 2010, the Huskies from Northern Illinois University and the Bulldogs from Fresno State,” said Danielle Brazil, executive director of the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. “This will mark 28 bowl games on The Blue, and we can’t wait to share this celebration of postseason college football with the best fans in Idaho.”

The Bulldogs are led by interim head coach Tim Skipper. Under Skipper, Fresno State (6-6, 4-3 MW) finished fourth in the Mountain West this season. Eleven players were named All-Mountain West, including first-team wide receiver Mac Dalena.

Fresno State led the conference with a 69.7 completion percentage. Dalena ranked third in the Mountain West with eight touchdowns receiving and 16.33 yards per catch. He was fourth in the Mountain West with 947 yards receiving and 79.92 yards per game.

Defensive end Devo Bridges was a member of the All-Mountain West Second Team. He led MW defensive linemen with 5.5 tackles per game in conference play.

Led by Bridges, the Bulldogs were best in the Mountain West in pass defense
efficiency (111.22) and held opponents to a 54.1 completion percentage, also tops in the
conference.

NIU (7-5, 4-4 MAC) placed two defensive players on the 2024 All-MAC First Team. Defensive tackle Devonte O’Malley ranked third in the conference and in the top 25 nationally with eight sacks. Nate Valcarcel made 50 tackles from his safety position and led NIU with eight pass breakups and two interceptions.

The duo helped the Huskies lead the MAC in total defense, sacks, third down conversion percentage and passing defense while holding opponents to less than 18 points per game.

Three offensive linemen received all-conference recognition, anchored by first-team honoree J.J. Lippe. The senior, in his sixth year with the Huskies, has made 46-career starts.

NIU made news in week two of the season when it knocked off No. 5 Notre Dame on the road 16-14 on Kanon Woodill’s 35-yard field goal with 31 seconds remaining. It was the first win for NIU and the MAC over a team ranked in the top five.

“I couldn’t be more excited to bring Utah State and Georgia State to Boise,” said Danielle Brazil, executive director of the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. “Our bowl game, now in its 27th year, has been supported by die-hard football fans in our community. With our Saturday afternoon kickoff, it is a great opportunity for our community to help us celebrate these student-athletes and the glorious gift of one more game on The Blue.”

Utah State (6-6, 4-4 MW) is making its fifth appearance in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, most by any school all-time. The Aggies lost the inaugural edition to Cincinnati (35-19) in 1997. Other trips include 2011 (lost 24-23 vs. Ohio), 2012 (won 41-15 vs. Toledo) and 2015 (lost 23-21 vs. Akron).

The Aggies are 6-10 all-time in bowl games and playing in the postseason for the third-straight season. Their first appearance came in the 1947 Raisin Bowl, a 20-0 loss to San Jose State. Last year, the Aggies lost 38-10 to Memphis in the First Responder Bowl.

Georgia State (6-6, 3-5 SBC) is making its first postseason appearance in the Treasure Valley. The Panthers are 3-2 all-time in bowl games after they began playing in the FBS in 2010.

The Aggies and Panthers have never met on the gridiron. Utah State is 9-12 all-time against current members of the Sun Belt. Georgia State lost to San Jose State in the 2015 Cure Bowl in its inaugural bowl game and that remains the only meeting for the Panthers against a Mountain West school.

Utah State’s defense is led by senior linebacker MJ Tafisi, Jr., a first-team All-Mountain West selection. He leads the conference and ranks eighth nationally with 10.9 tackles per game. He has recorded 131 tackles this season, including at least 10 in eight-straight games.

Joining Tafisi, Jr. on the All-Mountain West First Team are junior wide receiver Jalen Royals and sophomore safety Ike Larsen.

Royals has 68 receptions for 1,023 yards and 14 touchdowns. His touchdowns have tied a school record and rank second nationally this season. He leads the nation with seven scoring receptions of 50 yards or more. Larsen ranks second on the team with 91 tackles. He has recorded four interceptions, including a 47-yard pick six, and a pair of blocked kicks.

Utah State Head Coach Blake Anderson is in his third season at Utah State. He has posted a 23-16 record and has guided the Aggies to a bowl game each year. In his first season, he led the Aggies to their first Mountain West title and a No. 24 ranking in the final Associated Press poll. He is 74-53 overall in 10 seasons as a head coach.

Georgia State is led by All-Sun Belt First-Team selection Marcus Carroll. The senior running back leads the conference and ranks seventh nationally with 1,350 yards rushing. He is eighth in the country with 112.5 yards per game and has 13 touchdowns on the ground.

Joining Carroll on the All-SBC First Team is redshirt senior offensive lineman Travis Glover. He has helped lead the way to a balanced offense that has amassed over 2,000 yards rushing and passing while averaging 372.5 yards per game.

The defense is led by redshirt senior linebacker Jontrey Hunter. He ranks eighth in the Sun Belt with eight tackles per game and was named All-Sun Belt Third Team.

Georgia State Head Coach Shawn Elliott is 40-44 in seven seasons in Atlanta. He has guided the Panthers to five bowl games, including this year’s appearance in Boise, including all-three wins in school history.

Eastern Michigan, San José State Accept Invitations to Famous Idaho Potato Bowl
Kickoff set for Tuesday, Dec. 20 at 1:30 p.m. MT

BOISE, Idaho – The 26th Famous Idaho Potato Bowl will feature Eastern Michigan from the Mid-American Conference and San José State University from the Mountain West Conference. The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl will be played Tuesday, Dec. 20, at Albertsons Stadium on the campus of Boise State University. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. MT, on ESPN.

Tickets are on sale now through famousidahopotatobowl.com or the Boise State Athletics Ticket Office. Reservations for premium ticket packages are currently available, which include prime ticket locations, hospitality benefits in tent village and corporate exposure. Eastern Michigan and San José State are both appearing in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl for the first time. The Eagles and Spartans have previously met once on the gridiron – also in a bowl game. Eastern Michigan defeated San José State in the 1987 California Bowl, 30-27 on a touchdown pass in the closing minutes.

“We couldn’t be more excited to bring San José State and Eastern Michigan to Boise,” said Danielle Brazil, executive director of the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. “We know our community will embrace these student-athletes and provide unmatched hospitality – like we have for the last 25 years. This will be a great matchup for our fans and a true celebration of college football in Boise.”

San José State enters bowl season with a 7-4 record, including a 5-3 mark in Mountain West play. The Spartans have reached the postseason relying on a combination of taking care of the ball on offense and living in their opponents’ backfield on defense. They rank second nationally for fewest turnovers lost with just six giveaways on the year and are in the top 10 nationally in both sacks and tackles for loss.

The defense is led by Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year Viliami Fehoko. The two-time all-conference selection and Ted Hendricks Award Finalist ranks fourth in the country with 18.5 tackles for loss and 10th in the nation with nine sacks. Fellow defensive lineman Cade Hall was also named first-team All-Mountain West for the second time in his career, while linebacker Kyle Harmon earned first-team accolades for the third straight season.

Quarterback Chevan Cordeiro and wide receiver Elijah Cooks set the tone for San José State’s offense. Cooks was named first-team all-conference after hauling in 63 receptions for 983 yards and 10 touchdowns. Cordeiro picked up second-team honors.

The Spartans are making their 12th all-time bowl appearance and second in the last three seasons. Sixth-year head coach Brent Brennan led the program to its first Mountain West Conference title in 2020, the team’s first league title since 1991, and finished the season with a trip to the Arizona Bowl. This is the first time San José State has reached two bowl games in a three-year span since going to back-to-back California Bowls in 1986 and 1987.

Eastern Michigan will come to Boise riding a three-game winning streak to cap off an 8-4 regular season that included a 5-3 mark in MAC play, a share of the west division crown and the Michigan MAC Trophy. The Eagles took advantage of an opportunistic offense and a star-laden defense to secure the third eight-win season in program history.

Senior defensive end Jose Raimrez was named the MAC Defensive MVP, becoming the first player in program history to be named a conference player of the year. Ramirez, a finalist for the Ted Hendricks Award, leads the country with 1.09 sacks per game and is second nationally with 1.8 tackles for loss per game. Senior running back Samson Evans has scored 13 of his school-record 27 career rushing touchdowns this year on his way to second-team All-MAC honors.

Eastern Michigan is making its seventh all-time bowl appearance and 12 EMU student-athletes are expected to become the first in program history to suit up in four postseason contests with previous appearances in 2018, 2019 and 2021. It is the fifth bowl game under head coach Chris Creighton, the only coach in program history to lead the Eagles to multiple bowl games.

Nevada, Tulane Accept Invitations to Famous Idaho Potato Bowl

Nevada, Tulane Accept Invitations to Famous Idaho Potato Bowl
Kickoff set for Tuesday, Dec. 22 at 1:30 p.m. MT

BOISE, Idaho – The 24th Famous Idaho Potato Bowl will feature Nevada of the Mountain West Conference and Tulane from the American Athletic Conference. The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl will be played Tuesday, Dec. 22, at Albertsons Stadium on the campus of Boise State University. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. MT, on ESPN.

The two teams have met once previously on the gridiron. Tulane won on its home field in 1992, in the only prior matchup. Nevada, making its fourth appearance in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, is the first team to play in the game in back-to-back seasons since Utah State did so in 2011 and 2012. Tulane is making its first appearance in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

“We are excited to welcome two teams with a lot left to prove,” said Kevin McDonald, executive director of the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. “Nevada has a great history in our bowl game. We enjoyed hosting Coach Jay Norvell and his team last season and look forward to welcoming them back. There is a unique excitement surrounding the game when we get to bring a new team to Boise, and when a team is on a roll to end the season. Tulane checks both of those boxes.”

Nevada (6-2, 6-2 MW) finished third in the Mountain West standings, posting its best regular-season winning percentage since joining the conference. This will be the Wolf Pack’s third straight bowl appearance, 13th in the last 16 years and 18th in program history.

The Wolf Pack has ridden a potent offense, guided the duo of sophomore quarterback Carson Strong and junior wide receiver Romeo Doubs, to score 29.9 points per game. In just eight games this season, Strong has thrown for 2,587 yards and 22 touchdowns. Nine of his scoring strikes have gone to Doubs, who has 960 receiving yards on the year. Strong became just the second player in Famous Idaho Potato Bowl history to throw for 400 yards last season, when he racked up 402 yards in the final game of his redshirt freshman season.

Tulane (6-5, 3-5 AAC) won four of its final five regular-season games, including a 38-12 victory over No. 25 Army on Nov. 14, the Green Wave’s first win against a nationally-ranked team since 1984. They are led by an opportunistic defense that ranks eighth nationally with 19 turnovers forced and has scored three times, ranking third in the country.

This marks the third consecutive bowl appearance for Tulane, and the 14th in program history. It will be the first time a current member of the AAC appears in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl since Tulsa took on Georgia Tech at the end of the 2003 season. Fellow AAC member Cincinnati played in the inaugural Famous Idaho Potato Bowl in 1997.

Fans will not be permitted to attend this year’s game based on the guidance and protocols set forth by state and local health officials.
